Reality shows depend on a set of conventions to guide the audience through a familiar structure. With Reality Star, I was really interested in deconstructing the format and disrupting time, to bring attention to our expectations of the medium. Instead of experiencing a plot, we never get there. Something feels like it's about to happen, but instead, we're stuck in a montage of transition scenes with breaks for commercials. Without a cast of characters to drive the conflict, questions about what a reality star is and who/what is performing become confusing to me.
